Wear Red on Feb 3rd for Womens Heart Health

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the United States, and this condition can be averted with simple steps like regular exercise and a healthy diet. Join The Heart Truth campaign on Friday, February 3rd, for National Wear Red Day—to help spread the message that “Heart Disease Doesn’t Care What You Wear, It’s the #1 Killer of Women.^®“

Raise community awareness by wearing your favorite red scarf, tie, shirt or maybe even a red dress! At Williams Library we will have educational materials and give “The Red Dress” pins to the first fifteen who stop by wearing red.

Learn more about heart disease prevention, and take charge of your health by trying out some healthy recipies.

UpToDate is coming home!

Thanks to the support of URMC and Highland Hospital leadership, the library now provides offsite access to UpToDate for healthcare providers employed by Highland and URMC plus all URMC students.

Access UpToDate from home or another offsite location by browsing through the Quick Links on Williams Library’s website or Miner Library’s website, or use the URMC VPN client.

Not near your desktop? That’s ok! UpToDate has a mobile-friendly website for hand-held devices. No login required when you are on the UR_MCWireless wifi network, but you will need your NetID or AD login when offsite or on another wireless network. For support, call the Miner Library Computing Center Help Desk at 275-6865.

In addition, healthcare providers employed by URMC or Highland can earn CME/CE credit when using UpToDate to answer clinical questions. UpToDate is accredited for continuing education by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Be sure to choose the UpToDate for CME link in Miner’s Quick Links so that your identifying information can be transmitted to UpToDate. Extra Hats or Coats? We will Take Them!

Refugee Student Alliance is partnering with Physicians for Human Rights for a fourth annual Coat Drive from Oct. 15 to Dec 15. This year, Williams Library will host one of their collection boxes. The groups are collecting new or gently used coats, gloves, scarves, hats, sweaters, and winter boots. All items will be donated to Saint’s Place and Mary’s Place, not-for-profit organizations that distribute items to former refugees arriving to Rochester.

Highland’s collection box is located in the Williams Library and other boxes may be found in Strong Memorial Hospital, the River Campus, and affiliated locations. Questions? Call Williams staff at 1-6761 or email natalia_golub@urmc.rochester.edu

The American Nurses Association celebrates National Nurses Week May 6 through May 12th. The week ends on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who was born on May 12th in 1820. During this week at Highland Hospital we recognize and celebrate our nurses’ achievements.

We’d like to congratulate the nurses who are receiving excellence awards this week, particularly our own Pam White, MLS, MS, RN who will be given an award for Nursing Innovation!

New Standards of Practice from the Infusion Nurses Society

The Infusion Nurses Society (INS ) has released their 2011 edition of Infusion Nursing Standards Practice. New content includes standards on central vascular access device malposition, air and catheter embolism and more. All standards are reviewed, revised and updated with references from their supporting evidence base. The standards are issued as the January/February supplement to the INS official journal, Journal of Infusion Nursing.

This supplement can be found in the library on the new journal issue shelf under Journal of Infusion Nursing.

Free Printing Ends 12.01.2010

To control costs, save trees and reduce environmental waste, Williams Library will begin charging for printing and copying on December 1st, 2010. The fee will be 10 cents per B&W page, 25 cents per color page.

Library Website Better in IE7

If you’ve had any issues viewing pages on the library website, it may be because you haven’t upgraded your internet browser. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) isn’t compatible with this website. There’s an easy fix, to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7, IE7 is more versatile than IE6 and preferred by web designers. Simply call ISD at 275-3200 and request an upgrade now!

The Williams Health Sciences Library has purchased two electronic books through the R2 Digital Library.

Kozier & Erbs Fundamentals of Nursing, “presents the fundamentals of nursing care within the framework of the nursing process. [The book focuses]…on practical application with real-world examples and case studies.”
Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice “is for…nurses who are interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of holistic nursing. ..It provides a user-friendly nursing process format, standards of holistic nursing practice care plans with patient outcomes, outcome criteria, and evaluation guidelines for clinical practice to nurses in acute care, home care, and hospice, and those who are clinical specialists, educators, and bedside practitioners.”
